Multi-panel Editorial or Strip Cartoons
Having spent a lot of time in rural Colorado and Texas over the past forty years, I've heard many conversations about gun control leading to militias and armed militias leading to some form of civil war. In 2016 I drew this multi-panel cartoon in response to one of those conversations, where I tried to push back against the pro-civil war argument by asking, "what, exactly do you think you'll be getting into if you join a militia to be part of an armed insurrection? Do you think you'll be freer under some paramilitary yoke? And what form of totalitarian ideology will you be joining?"
This cartoon was for my personal expression. If it had been intended for print, I would have tightened-up/cleared-up the lettering and been more consistent with the line strengths. |
Single Panel Editorial or Strip Cartoons
On January 7th, 2015, in Paris, France, Islamist members of al-Qaeda attacked the offices of the weekly satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo. 12 people were murdered and 11 injured, and the attack spawned other Islamist attacks in France.
In response to these hate crimes, artists and protestors around the world responded with "Jes suis Charlie" (I am Charlie) and by posting art on social media that supported the victims and the magazine and/or derided the ignorant cowards who perpetrated them. This single panel cartoon was my contribution. |
Quick Response Inked Sketches
By "quick response," I mean that these were sketches posted into a personal journal for the first iteration of the Manitou Journal Project, which was an online collective art project during the Covid year. Facilitators gave participants a prompt, and we had one week to upload our journal entries. My personal goal was to create a drawing/doodle inside of one or two hours.
For example, as with the far-left drawing, the prompt for the week was "Draw a mythical creature." I was pretty upset that week about the January 6th attacks and subsequent impeachment. Intended only for social media posting, these were stream-of-consciousness drawings that only took a few hours, each.
If these had been intended for print, I would have improved the inking and digitally colored them.
