Artist Statements (totally voluntary)

There is no expectation for you to write an artist statement, but, if you are interested in having an artist statement accompanying your artwork that explains motivation, inspiration, artistic approach, etc., please follow these guidelines, per the gallery's request:
  • Keep the length to a medium paragraph (max 10 sentences) and no more so the walls are not overwhelmed with text and it is all uniform.
  • EMAIL your statement to Amanda (art111.springs@gmail.com) the same week that you drop off your artwork (around July 27th-28th).
  • Put your name at the bottom of the statement.
  • The statement should only be about the artwork, not a personal bio.
  • Amanda will print out the statements so that they are uniform.
  • Email only. Do not give her a printed copy, because she will not have time to re-type it.
  • Do not send it too early. July 27th-28th is ideal so she does not have to dig through past emails to find yours.

Thank you!

Art 111 Commission and Finished Artwork Expectations

Participating artists, please be aware that the gallery will assess a 40% commission on the sale of your work (60/40).

The following are the Art 111 Gallery's Expectations for your finished pieces, including acceptable hardware, framing, finishing, canvas size, etc. A printable version is available here as a PDF file.
Art 111 Gallery expects gallery level attention to detail when it comes to the art hung in their space. They expect artists to use professional supplies to ensure the life of your paintings/sculpture/pottery etc. so their clients can enjoy their art investment for years to come.
ALL art to be hung on the walls must have the following:
  • D-ring or eyelet hardware (eyelets must be screwed into the interior of the canvas frame/piece so the work will lay flat against the wall)
  • Picture wire used for hanging (no saw tooth style hardware will be accepted)
  • Work must be varnished with whatever product is appropriate for your medium. This step is VERY important. Not only does it give your work a finished feel, makes your colors pop but it makes it possible for the buyer to clean their investment in the future.
  • Edges of canvas must be finished or have the painting wrap around the edge completely, no choppy looking sides.
  • No ¾” canvas unless it is in a frame. Only deep edge, 1.5” or deeper canvas will be accepted. Deep edges do not have to be framed but, of course, can be.
  • Frames must be in good shape without dings, chips or splits. We are leery of up-cycled frames for these reasons and they will be assessed on case by case bases. No frames with the tripod leg for sitting on a table will be accepted for anything that is meant to hang on the wall. This style of frame is ok if the piece is designed to sit on a table and not be hung.
  • Side note: Frames should be neutral in nature and color unless it is designed as part of the art piece. A more neutral frame will appeal to a wider range of buyers because it fits into more styles of décor in their homes. Black, white, or another neutral or natural color and design is recommended.
  • Work must be signed.
  • If work is dated, nothing over 3 years old will be accepted.
* Canvas with any warping will not be accepted or displayed if the warp is missed upon intake.
All art will be assessed on a case by case basis to ensure that the most creative freedoms for artist are upheld and honored as well upholding the gallery standards.

If you have any questions about these expectations with relation to the piece you are submitting for the show, please contact Amanda at Art 111.

Artist's Vision for the Show

To clarify and expand on a point originally posted in the guidelines, below: your artwork can be about anything related to bees, pollinators, or how they may interact with your subject in some way. I ask that somewhere in the piece, a dead bee is included. If you are struggling with how to execute that, this video might give you some ideas.

General Theme Guidelines

For artists participating in the gallery show titled, "A Farewell to Bees"  -- at Art 111 Gallery and Art Supply -- here are some general guidelines and my goal for the show's theme.
  • Consider the impact of the image of the dead bee.
  • Promote dialogue about how this image makes people feel or respond.
  • You have the freedom to explore the image and the topic any way you want, but I ask that you include the semblance of a dead bee, in some form, into your artwork.
  • You can explore causes, importance, hoax or not, impact on civilization, culprits, other pollinators, how the bee has been historically depicted and if that might change when/if they are gone.
  • Social commentary is welcome.

Opening night of the show will be First Friday, August 2nd. A special artists' reception (guests and public are welcome) and topic conversation will be held on the Third Friday, August 16th.

If you have any questions about how you would like to participate, the medium you'd like to use, size of piece, etc. please contact Amanda Stoke at Art 111 Gallery or contact me, Thom Phelps.
