Hartman
Every journey begins with a single step, to paraphrase a Chinese proverb.
Hartman, the second in the Piper series is on that journey, climbing over the obstacles and looking to the future, with plenty of extra love.

A Farewell to Bees - steel sculpture
"Millie" (my wife's nickname for the piece) was on display at Art 111 Gallery & Art Supply for the Farewell to Bees show. |
A Farewell to Bees is available for sale. It would look good in a large garden or other natural setting. Or it would be an ideal gift to a botanical garden, pollinator nature preserve, or apiary. Contact Thom for details on purchasing this thought-provoking piece, as well as details on shipping and installation.
Blue Heron
A client comes to me with two rocks she found while hiking in the Rocky Mountains, a blue rock and white rock. "Can you make me a blue heron," she asks, "incorporating these rocks in the design?"
"Sure!" I say. And this is the result.
The blue heron is all steel that I hand-cut and assembled, working the blue rock into the bird's crest and the white rock into its base. The tail feathers are layered steel panels and it is colored with a patina and the highlights and eye are acrylic paint.

Giving Tree
A beautiful idea brought to life in a beautiful place, the Giving Tree sculpture looks out over the city of downtown Colorado Springs from its vantage point in front of the award-winning Giving Tree Montessori School.
Giving Tree is custom-designed, waterjet cut steel and hand-cut steel with rusty red, copper and orange patinas, mounted to a base that holds up the backdrop of three Colorado flagstones. Smaller steel hearts hang from hooks, providing motion and light, tinkly sound in the wind.

Colorado Destiny
I was honored to be asked by the city of Colorado Springs's Downtown Ventures to submit designs for 2019's ArtSpot and came up with "Colorado Destiny" as the entry they chose. As I explained in the proposal's artist statement, "The dreams of many of Colorado’s early settlers were borne here upon the railways. This steel piece commemorates our founders’ inspirations with the rails traveling in all directions and their dreams borne upon them."
Sweetman Sunrise
Alternately titled, "Sweetman Sunset" (depending on the time of day), this wonderful commission piece was a joy to build. The patina colors worked great and matched the colors used around the home. It has become an eye-catching landmark for the neighborhood.
Rain Weary
Sometimes the weight of the world, the constant bombardment of suffering is too much for one soul to endure. This piece, titled "Rain Weary" embodies that vision, with the harried subject fallen to her knees beneath her battered umbrella. Several years ago some dear friends donated a crate of antique porcelain tiles to me that they reclaimed from their 110+ year old farm house. They were hoping I could use them for one of my projects. In the fall of 2017 I was inspired to create this piece for a local art show.
The pedestal and umbrella are steel with powder coating on the pedestal and hand-brushed patinas on the umbrella, and the body incorporates those donated porcelain tiles on a steel and cement armature (welded to the pedestal).

Diamondback
Rising up from the landscape, the geometry of nature in this Arizona flagstone is framed by my hand-cut steel. "Diamondback" is a great accent or centerpiece to any size garden or yard.
Om Chime 1
Rustic red, distressed steel chime, with the "om" symbol in Sanskrit cut into it, suspended between two timbers, this beautiful-sounding chime is an ideal piece for your meditative space or Zen garden. The inverted pyramid sail hanging from the clapper also has the ohm symbol cut into each side and is equipped with a solar light, illuminating the "sound of the universe."
24" wide (timber-to-timber) and 82" tall. Shown here two feet taller, because the bottom two feet of the timber legs should be buried. Available for purchase.

Balanced Light
What's the story about the llama?
Meet Gus, the search and rescue llama.
Gus lives in Monument, Colorado, and shares his yard with several pieces I created in 2o16 on commission. He's a sweetheart, and doesn't "Balanced Light" look good on his patio?

The design's shadow and cascading stained glass colors sweep across the paver stones for hours before sunset. Accompanying this piece is also as 12 foot tall perch for birds, called, "Perched in SymmeTree" and a free-hanging chime that continues the raven silhouette motif.
This piece was purchased by the city of Colorado Springs for its 2016 ARTSPOT downtown beautification project. Installed February, 2017.
Due to some vandalism, we reworked it to a sturdier design, as you can see in the summer photo. |
High Plains Desert Flower
The arid landscape and extreme temperatures of the Pikes Peak region require outdoor plants to have a particular sturdiness, from buffalo grass and yucca plants to the hardy pine and high altitude aspens. I explore the sturdy hardiness of our indigenous flora with this piece, composed of steel and Colorado stone.
Here it is in the summertime, full bloom. |
Classic Album Sundays
One Sunday every month, a friend of mine used to host an afternoon of listening to classic vinyl albums, called Classic Album Sundays Colorado Springs (CAS-CS). When I went, I liked to take my sketch pad and draw while the attendees drank craft beer and ate homemade cookies. I drew this portrait of Nick Cave, the Aussie post-punk rocker of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds while we listened to his album, "The Boatman's Call" in March 2018.
Prior to that, I had just doodled and played around during the listening sessions, like the time I did this Frank Zappa sort of cartoonish. We framed it and sold it to a music appreciator to raise money for CAS-CS. |
